Journaling Prompts for Colour, Calm & Creative Reflection

Have you ever noticed how certain colours seem to match your mood — or even change it?

Some days call for soft blues and sage greens.
Others crave warmth, peach, or gentle yellow.
And sometimes, all we need is a quiet moment to sit with a colour and see what it has to say.

This is where colour therapy journaling and meditative watercolour come together.

In this post, I want to introduce you to a gentler way of using colour — not to create “perfect” artwork, but to support your emotions, calm your nervous system, and reconnect with yourself creatively.

Choosing Colours Based on Your Mood

Colour therapy is the practice of using colour intentionally to support emotional and energetic wellbeing. When combined with watercolour, it becomes a beautifully intuitive process.

Instead of asking “What should I paint?”, you begin by asking:

  • How do I feel today?

  • What colour am I drawn to?

  • What do I need more of — calm, energy, comfort, clarity?

In my Colour Therapy Meditation Watercolour Guide, I walk you through how to:

  • Tune into your mood before painting

  • Choose colours that support how you’re feeling

  • Use colour gently, without rules or pressure

You don’t need art experience to do this — curiosity is enough.

Journaling Prompts to Deepen Your Practice

Journaling alongside painting can help you slow down and make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface.

In the guide, you’ll find guided journaling prompts designed to:

  • Encourage emotional awareness

  • Release mental clutter

  • Reflect on colour choices and feelings

  • Build a deeper connection with your creative practice

Some prompts are short and simple. Others invite a little more reflection.

There’s no right or wrong way to respond — you can write a sentence, a page, or simply sit quietly with the question.

Meditation Prompts for Colour & Calm

To support your creative practice even further, the guide also includes 30 colour-inspired meditation prompts.

These are gentle, beginner-friendly prompts you can use:

  • Before painting, to centre yourself

  • During painting, to stay present

  • Or on days when you don’t feel like painting at all

They’re perfect for:

  • Quiet mornings

  • Evening wind-down routines

  • Creative reset moments

Even five minutes with a colour and a prompt can make a difference.

Exercise Sheets for Mindful Creativity

Alongside the prompts, you’ll also find printable exercise sheets that help you:

  • Track moods and colour choices

  • Reflect on emotional shifts

  • Build a mindful painting habit

  • Create a safe, pressure-free creative space

These sheets are designed to be reused again and again — in sketchbooks, journals, or as loose pages.
