Watercolour — The Most Enjoyable Way to Be Creative
You might think you need fancy supplies, years of experience, or a wild imagination to create beautiful watercolours.
But really you only need three things:
♥︎ a keen interest
♥︎ a brush and paint set
♥︎ and a little pad
1. Watercolour invites experimentation
Unlike other mediums, watercolour rewards fun.
You can splash, dab, drop, blend, tilt… and it somehow always looks magical and you learn something new.
Starting out? trying choosing two colours and watch them blend.
Even as a beginner your brush strokes can look soft and even whimsical, try out different brushes and colours and see where this leads.
2. It suits every mood
Want calm? Try loose florals.
Feeling focused? Go for detailed botanicals.
Need something seasonal, maybe cosy and festive? Paint a gingerbread man or a Christmas bauble (yes, please!).
Watercolour can be adapted to your mood, so see how you feel and create something new.
3. You don’t need a studio
All you really need is:
-
a small paint set
-
a brush or small brush set
-
a cup of water
-
and a paint book
and that’s it! I’ve painted beautiful pieces at the beach on my lab, at my office desk and in the garden, so don’t worry if you haven’t got you’re ‘perfect spot’ just now.
4. It’s easy to learn
The basics come quickly:
-
washes
-
gradients
-
simple leaves
-
petals
-
layering
But as you grow, the medium grows with you.
There’s always something new to try: textures, florals, animals, whimsical characters… it never gets boring, which is great, as I hate being bored! I love exploring new techniques and styles.
5. Each piece feels personal
A simple set of leaves or flowers becomes something that feels uniquely yours.
Even if two artists follow the exact same tutorial, the finished work looks completely different — and that individuality is great, you can your own flair and style to each piece, making it truly yours.
